Decadal to seasonal variability of Arctic sea ice albedo

چکیده
[1] A controlling factor in the seasonal and climatological evolution of the sea ice cover is its albedo a. Here we analyze Arctic data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Polar Pathfinder and assess the seasonality and variability of broadband albedo from a 23 year daily record. We produce a histogram of daily albedo over ice covered regions in which the principal albedo transitions are seen; high albedo in late winter and spring, the onset of snowmelt and melt pond formation in the summer, and fall freezeup. The bimodal late summer distribution demonstrates the combination of the poleward progression of the onset of melt with the coexistence of perennial bare ice with melt ponds and open water, which then merge to a broad peak at a ^ 0.5. We find the interannual variability to be dominated by the low end of the a distribution, highlighting the controlling influence of the ice thickness distribution and large‐ scale ice edge dynamics. The statistics obtained provide a simple framework for model studies of albedo parameterizations and sensitivities.Citation: Agarwal, S.,W.Moon, and J. S. متن کاملAlbedo evolution of seasonal Arctic sea ice
[1] There is an ongoing shift in the Arctic sea ice cover from multiyear ice to seasonal ice. Here we examine the impact of this shift on sea ice albedo. Our analysis of observations from four years of field experiments indicates that seasonal ice undergoes an albedo evolution with seven phases; cold snow, melting snow, pond formation, pond drainage, pond evolution, open water, and freezeup. On...
متن کاملObserved changes in the albedo of the Arctic sea ice zone between 1982-2009
The surface albedo of the Arctic sea ice zone is a crucial component in the energy budget of the Arctic region [1, 2]. The treatment of sea ice albedo has been identified as a main source of variability in the future sea ice mass loss forecasts in coupled climate models [3]. There is a clear need to establish datasets of Arctic sea ice albedo to study the changes based on observational data, an...
متن کاملThe Relation among Sea Ice, Surface Temperature, and Atmospheric Circulation in Simulations of Future Climate
Observations document substantial 20-40 year trends in the past several decades in the Arctic. Studies show sea ice thickness and extent have declined, air temperature has increased, and the temperature and salinity of the upper ocean have increased (e.g., see Serreze et al., 2000). At the same time, we have seen a weakening of the tropospheric anticyclone over the Beaufort Sea that can be asso...
متن کاملA Stochastic Dynamical Model of Arctic Sea Ice
The noise forcing underlying the variability in the Arctic ice cover has a wide range of principally unknown origins. For this reason, the analytical and numerical solutions of a stochastic Arctic sea ice model are analyzed with both additive and multiplicative noise over a wide range of external heat fluxes DF0, corresponding to greenhouse gas forcing. The stochastic variability fundamentally ...
